13 Oct 2026 · 1 min read · Jay Kular

Qualifications, certification, net worth, fee structure and client agreements — what to put in place before you apply.
Becoming a SEBI Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) is a significant professional milestone. The application itself is only one step; readiness is what determines a smooth registration.
Before you apply
- Confirm that the principal officer and persons associated with advice hold the required qualifications and NISM certifications
- Maintain the prescribed net worth (or networth for non-individuals)
- Decide on the fee model and ensure it is within regulatory limits
- Draft the investment advisory agreement with mandatory terms
Operational readiness
Risk profiling, suitability assessment, record maintenance and segregation of advisory and distribution activities are areas where inspections frequently find gaps.
After registration
Annual compliance audit, timely fee disclosures, grievance redressal and periodic reporting form the ongoing obligations.
